The operation, aimed at reducing road fatalities and ensuring public safety, has seen multiple fatalities and thousands of violations recorded.
Irish police have apprehended numerous motorists over the St. Brigid's Bank Holiday weekend for various traffic violations, including speeding and driving under the influence. The Roads Policing Operation, launched at 7 am on Thursday, January 30, and scheduled to conclude at 7 am on Tuesday, February 4, has seen a significant number of arrests and detections.
During the operation's first four days, authorities recorded three fatalities resulting from road traffic collisions, raising the total number of road fatalities in Ireland this year to 14. An Garda Síochána has been conducting both mandatory intoxicant testing (MIT) and high-visibility policing checkpoints throughout the weekend. To date, 163 individuals have been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. In excess of 1,000 drivers were detected for speeding offences within the first four days of the operation. Notable top speeds recorded include a driver clocked at 125 km/h in a 100 km/h zone. These figures are particularly alarming given the reduced number of motorists on the roads due to the ongoing impact of Storm Éowyn. An Garda Síochána is urging the public to exercise extreme caution while using the roads during the Bank Holiday weekend. The risk of fatal or serious injury collisions is highest between midday and 3 pm each day. Authorities are appealing to all road users to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and remind drivers to plan ahead and arrange safe transportation if they intend to socialize. All drivers are advised to slow down, remain vigilant, and prioritize safe driving practices throughout the weekend.
