The 88-year-old pontiff has been in hospital with double pneumonia for more than two weeks since he was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on the 14th of February
Pope Francis suffered two episodes of “acute respiratory failure” yesterday , according to a new statement from the Vatican.
On Monday evening, the Press Office said Pope Francis had suffered “two episodes of acute respiratory insufficiency, caused by a significant accumulation of endobronchial mucus and consequent bronchospasm.”“ afternoon, non-invasive mechanical ventilation was resumed. The Holy Father remained alert, oriented and cooperative at all times,” noted the Holy See Press Office.
His clinical condition remains complex, and further respiratory crises remain possible. The Pope’s doctors said his prognosis remains “guarded.”In a statement over the weekend, the press office said that the 88-year-old experienced a vomiting episode, and a "sudden worsening of his respiratory condition." He required the use of an oxygen face mask to help him breathe. The Vatican said His Holiness had responded well to oxygen therapy.
If the pope were to pass away, an Irish Cardinal, Kevin Farrell, will play a crucial role in sharing the news with the world and will also become interim pope until a new pontiff is elected.
