Nicky Henderson 's star novice chaser, Sir Gino , has been sidelined for the remainder of the season, dealing a significant blow to the Seven Barrows trainer's hopes at the upcoming Cheltenham Festival . The five-year-old had emerged as the overwhelming favorite for the Arkle Novice Chase at next month's prestigious racing event. However, he was forced to withdraw from a scheduled appearance at Newbury on Saturday due to what was initially described as a minor wound on his hind leg.
The injury has unfortunately worsened, developing into an infection that necessitates hospitalization. Sir Gino is currently receiving treatment at an equine hospital. Henderson released a statement on X, expressing his disappointment and outlining the horse's condition. 'Unfortunately, Sir Gino's situation has taken a turn for the worse, and he has been admitted to the equine hospital,' Henderson stated. 'Following initial examinations at Donnington Grove, an infection has invaded the ligaments in his near hind leg. This will require extensive treatment, which sadly rules him out of any further racing this season.' Henderson continued, 'This is a devastating blow to Joe and Marie Donnelly, and everyone at Seven Barrows, but we will be doing everything in our power to help this incredible young talent return to full fitness next season.' The news comes as a major setback for Henderson and his team, who had high expectations for Sir Gino's performance at Cheltenham. His absence will undoubtedly create a void in the Arkle Novice Chase, leaving the race wide open for other contenders
