Thousands remain without power in Ireland a week after Storm Eowyn caused widespread disruption. Engineers continue restoration efforts.
Almost 60,000 energy customers are still without power on the island of Ireland more than a week after Storm Eowyn struck. On Saturday, engineers in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland , aided by colleagues from Great Britain and continental Europe, continued their efforts to restore electricity supply to those who remain disconnected.
Around 56,000 homes, farms, schools, and businesses were without power south of the border, while in Northern Ireland, the figure had dropped to 3,000. Since the destructive storm last Friday, power has been restored to 712,000 customers in the Republic of Ireland and 282,000 in Northern Ireland. The number of properties without a water supply has fallen below 460 in the Republic of Ireland. NIE Networks is working to reconnect the remaining 3,000 customers without power by Monday. ESB Networks anticipates that electricity supply will be restored to the 56,000 properties in the Republic of Ireland throughout the coming week. Ireland's National Emergency Co-ordination Group (NECG) reconvened on Saturday to oversee the ongoing efforts to restore essential services.
