Storm Éowyn batters Ireland with record-breaking winds, leaving hundreds of thousands without power. Authorities issue 'danger to life' warnings, prompting school closures, public transport suspensions, and flight cancellations.

Storm Éowyn has wreaked havoc across the country overnight. The first Status Red warning came into effect in the west of Ireland at 2am, but as the storm progresses eastward this morning, the worst is yet to come for other regions. Donegal has also been placed under a Status Red warning, which commenced at 7am and will remain in effect until 2pm this afternoon. Early this morning, Ireland shattered its record for the highest wind gust ever recorded.

Met Éireann reported a gust of 183km/h at Mace Head, surpassing the previous record of 182km/h. Knock and Shannon recorded gusts of 139km/h and 137km/h respectively. The average wind speed since the storm's onset reached 130 km/h at Mace Head, classified as a hurricane-force wind.Adding to the chaos, at least 560,000 customers are currently without power. ESB Networks has stated that the number of power outages caused by Storm Éowyn is 'unprecedented', attributing them to 'widespread and extensive' damage to electricity infrastructure. They anticipate 'significant' further outages. ESB Networks issued a public safety warning urging people to avoid fallen wires or damaged electricity infrastructure, emphasizing their live and dangerous nature. The ESB advised reporting any damage to 1800 372 999. Crews and contractors will be deployed as soon as conditions allow to assess the network and restore power safely and efficiently. However, given the anticipated damage extent nationwide, restoration is expected to take several days. Estimated restoration times will be available on www.PowerCheck.ie as teams assess network faults. All emergency services have urged the public to remain indoors today until the red warning expires in their respective areas, citing a 'danger to life' posed by the storm. Schools, creches, and third-level institutions are closed, while public transportation will remain suspended until the red warning is lifted. Dublin Airport has cancelled a 'large number' of flights this morning due to hazardous conditions, primarily those scheduled before 9am. Passengers are encouraged to re-book cancelled flights online. Further cancellations and delays are possible throughout the day
