Meteorologist Mark Bowe, despite experiencing cyclones, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions, calls Storm Eowyn the 'most impactful' event in his career. The storm caused widespread damage, nearly one million power and water outages, and a humanitarian crisis. While recovery efforts are underway, concerns remain for vulnerable populations, especially the elderly and homeless, with cold temperatures predicted for the weekend.
One of Met Eireann’s top meteorologists witnessed lethal cyclones, earthquakes, and volcanoes – but has never seen anything like the disruption caused by Storm Eowyn.
“I have been here four-and-a-half years and it is the first time in my career that I have seen red warnings for the entire country. Meanwhile the Taoiseach acknowledged all the work and effort so far that that has gone into the storm response - particularly frontline workers. Doctors’ health centres were also hit, prompting calls from Galway West TD Mairead Farrell for generators.
She likened the post-storm emergency to a "humanitarian crisis", accused the authorities of “huge inaction”, and claimed “we are left to fend for ourselves”.
