The HSE has warned that norovirus is spreading rapidly across Ireland, and has urged people to stay home for at least 48 hours after symptoms like vomiting and diarrhoea have passed to help curb the outbreak.

Health officials are urging people to look out for some of the telltale signs of a nasty winter bug that is currently spreading "at high levels" in Ireland. The HSE has reported a surge in cases of norovirus and has warned that this trend is expected to continue "for the next number of weeks".

The seasonal surge of norovirus comes at a time when Ireland is already dealing with high levels of influenza, RSV and Covid. The HSE says these viruses combined are placing increased pressure on hospitals and healthcare services. It added: "Norovirus, in most people, is an unpleasant but mild illness that passes off quickly without any treatment. It can usually be managed at home - drinking plenty of fluids is usually all that is needed. It's not always possible to avoid getting norovirus, but following the above advice can help stop the virus spreading."
