This method won't actually ripen them but will result in a rubbery mess with an unpleasant taste. She explains, 'It 'kind of' works but ONLY if you have an almost ripe avocado. But working with a rock-hard avocado – don't try it. Please. You'll just end up wasting your time and end up with a soft and slimy avocado whose interior flesh is still rock hard.' Extreme heat won't do the trick because it merely softens the fruit's exterior, leaving you with a soggy outer layer and a stubbornly unripe core. Instead, Lori advocates for a natural approach. She advises storing your avocados in a bag together with an apple or banana. As fruits are picked, they release ethylene gas, a naturally occurring ripening agent that softens the fruit and enhances its sweetness. Apples and bananas are particularly prolific producers of ethylene, which means they can work wonders on other fruits when sealed inside a paper bag. Lori shares this tip: 'Apples and bananas give off ethylene which is a natural food ripening agent. By 'trapping' the avocado in the bag with the fruit you're speeding up the ripening process of the avocado.' To naturally ripen avocados using the paper bag method, simply place any unripe avocados in a paper bag with an apple or banana. Fold the bag tightly to block out light, securing it with a rubber band or paper clip if needed. Then, store the bag in a dark kitchen area, such as a pantry or cupboard. Keep the bag away from light and heat, as this can damage the avocados instead of ripening them. Use a breathable container like a paper bag to allow air circulation, as trapped moisture can cause rot or mold. Avoid using plastic bags, as they create a damp environment that fosters bacterial growth. After 24 hours, open the bag to discover your avocados have transformed into green, soft, and deliciously ripe fruit, ready to enjoy.
