Irish Mirror reports on the arrest of a trainee Garda for allegedly stealing a wallet from a crime victim during a statement. The trainee was released without charge, but investigations are ongoing. This incident follows the arrest of a former Garda member for alleged extortion and a serving officer for suspected harassment.

A trainee Garda was arrested for allegedly stealing a wallet from a victim of crime while taking a statement at a home, The Irish Mirror can reveal. The trainee was on placement away from An Garda Síochána’s training college in Templemore when the incident occurred. The man was arrested after allegedly stealing a wallet that had a GPS tracker in it. He was subsequently released without charge but investigations are ongoing. It is believed that the arrest took place in the past week.

A garda spokesperson confirmed that it is investigating the circumstances of a theft that is alleged to have occurred in a domestic residence. They continued: “A male has been arrested and detained under section 4 Criminal Justice Act 1984 in relation to this offence. The male was subsequently released without charge and investigations are ongoing.” Meanwhile, The Irish Mirror has also learned that detectives from the elite Anti Corruption Unit have in recent days arrested a former member of the force – as part of a long running probe, The probe is into allegations that former members of a certain unit in the Dublin area extorted money from civilians. The man, who left the force in recent years, was arrested earlier this week, before being questioned. He was later released without charge. Gardaí confirmed the arrest in a statement to us last night. They said: “As part of an ongoing investigation into the activities of a particular Garda unit based in the Dublin Region a male in his 50s was arrested and detained under section 4 Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a Garda Station in North Dublin earlier this week. “The male was released without charge and investigations are ongoing. As this is an ongoing criminal investigation An Garda Síochána is making no further comment.” And both arrests come just over a week after we revealed that a serving officer was arrested on suspicion of harassing another member of the force. The Mirror revealed that the female officer, who is not a senior garda but does supervise other officers, was arrested by detectives from the Anti-Corruption Unit earlier this month. We established the officer was arrested on suspicion of harassing a male member of the force over a long period of time. It’s understood the alleged injured party previously worked in the same station as the suspect, but is now based in another part of the country. Sources say it is alleged she plagued the male officer and his wife. “The allegation is that she was sending letters to his house, both to him and his wife. She was plaguing him.
