A south Dublin school has paid tribute to a 'wonderful' teacher and assistant principal who tragically passed away earlier this week. Marie Gildea, from Kinnegad in Westmeath, passed away 'peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving family' on Monday (January 20) after a recent illness. She is survived by her husband James, her two children and four brothers.

Ms Gildea worked as a teacher and assistant principal at Scoil Mhuire Girls National School in Sandymount, south Dublin, with school officials paying tribute to the popular educator. In a message shared on social media, a spokesperson for Scoil Mhuire said: 'A very sad day in Scoil Mhuire GNS as news filtered through that we had lost the wonderful Ms. Marie Gildea after a recent illness. 'An amazing teacher, a fantastic assistant Principal and a great friend to all. Her kindness knew no bounds. Ni bheidh a leitheid aris ann!' Ms Gidea has been remembered as a 'kind and caring teacher' who 'brought a great sense of fun to the classroom,' with the parents of a number of her former students paying heartfelt tribute to the mother-of-two. 'Our deepest sympathy to Ms Gildea's family on this sad day,' one person said. 'We don't have enough words to praise Marie and describe the difference that she made on Ivette, with her enthusiastic, caring and positive teaching, always with a smile. She will be always in our memories.' Another person added: 'Our deepest condolences to the Mullally & Gildea families. Ms Gildea taught our daughter Olivia during Covid. She will be remembered with fondness by all of us from Olivia's time in Scoil Mhuire where she brought joy, fun and laughter to her school years. May she rest in peace.' A third mourner said: 'Deepest and heartfelt sympathies to Ms. Gildea's family - we were very saddened to hear of her untimely passing, she was a really lovely, kind and caring teacher and brought a great sense of fun to the classroom for the Scoil Mhuire Girls.' Another heartbroken parent added: 'Very saddened to hear that Ms Gildea has passed. She was a 'treasure' and how lucky we are as parents that our children experienced her magic. Special memories & life skills taught that they carry forever. She was always so kind, so sincere and full of fun. A wonderful person.'
