Irish tourists in Santorini and Amorgos are urged to be extremely cautious and consider evacuating as a series of powerful earthquakes continue to shake the popular Greek islands. Authorities have declared a State of Emergency, with fears of further tremors, landslides, and structural damage.

Irish tourists in certain areas of Greece have been strongly advised to exercise extreme caution or, if necessary, evacuate the islands after a series of powerful earthquakes struck the popular holiday destinations of Santorini and Amorgos . Authorities have declared a State of Emergency as the region continues to experience ongoing seismic activity, with concerns about potential further tremors, landslides, and structural damage.

Yesterday, Santorini was hit by its most intense earthquake to date amidst weeks of unusual seismic activity. The tremor, measuring 5.3 in magnitude, is the strongest among thousands that have shaken the volcanic island in recent weeks. Several additional earthquakes, ranging in magnitude from 4 to 4.8, also occurred on Tuesday, with epicenters located between Amorgos and Santorini. Since January 26th, nearly 12,000 earthquakes exceeding 1.0 in magnitude have been recorded in the area, including 109 tremors on Monday alone, according to the crisis management committee of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. The committee stated: 'The possibility of a major earthquake following cannot be ruled out.' The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs has issued urgent travel advice to its citizens, currently in effect until March 3, 2025. A spokesperson said: 'The areas of Santorini (Thira) and Amorgos are currently experiencing a significant volume of earthquakes. The authorities have declared a State of Emergency in the region, and have issued guidance to those on these islands: Irish citizens in the area are advised to stay informed, follow local authority instructions, and be prepared to leave if conditions worsen. Emergency assistance is available by calling 112, and evacuation maps are accessible through mySafetyPlan. Irish travellers with upcoming trips to Santorini and Amorgos are urged to reconsider their plans. The State of Emergency was declared last week as aftershocks continued to rattle the region. Rescue teams equipped with drones and sniffer dogs have been deployed, while coastguard and navy vessels remain on standby. Thousands of residents and tourists have already fled the islands, and schools in Santorini and nearby areas have been ordered to remain closed. Greek Deputy Health Minister Marios Themistokleous confirmed that specialist doctors had been sent to Santorini’s hospital, where tents have been set up outside as a precaution. Medical staff have even conducted evacuation drills, rushing outside with stretchers carrying mock patients. While earthquakes are relatively common in Greece, experts say this level of sustained seismic activity is highly unusual. The relentless tremors over several weeks have left both locals and tourists fearing further devastation
