Storm Herminia is causing havoc in Spain with strong winds, torrential rain, dangerous waves and even snow. Spanish authorities have issued a 'special advisory notice' and a series of weather warnings covering much of the mainland and the Balearic Islands until Thursday. Irish tourists are urged to monitor weather updates and take precautions.
An urgent warning has been issued to Irish holidaymakers heading to Spain as the country battles a significant weather event. Storm Herminia is currently battering large parts of the country with strong winds, torrential rain, dangerous waves and even snow.
Orange warnings are also in force along parts of the northern coastline, while yellow warnings cover large parts of the southeast coast - including resorts that are popular with Irish tourists like Benidorm, Alicante, Almeria and Murcia. These warnings are mainly for wind, with gusts of up to 80km/h forecast.
An AEMET spokesperson said today: "The deep storm Herminia, centered around the British Isles, continues to generate a strong storm that today is extending to most of the Peninsula and, to a lesser extent, to the Balearic Islands. Wind and waves are the most relevant phenomena, but also widespread rainfall is expected, more abundant in the northwest, which will be in the form of snow in mountain areas.
Looking ahead to later in the week, it added: "On Thursday it is likely that the wind will turn north and a mass of air will break into the Peninsula very cold of polar origin. If this scenario comes true, snowfall would become the most significant.
