A powerful storm system, dubbed Storm Herminia, is wreaking havoc across Spain, bringing dangerous conditions for travelers. The Spanish meteorological agency, AEMET, has issued a range of alerts, with the north coast under a severe Red warning due to massive sea swells and high winds. The storm is expected to gradually ease by Wednesday, but another deep Atlantic storm is forecast to arrive.

Irish travelers heading to Spain are being warned about a powerful storm system impacting the country. Known as Storm Herminia , the storm is bringing high winds , heavy rainfall, dangerous sea swells , and even snowfall to parts of Spain . The Spanish meteorological agency, AEMET , has issued a 'special advisory notice' along with numerous alerts covering a large portion of the mainland and extending to the Balearic Islands until Thursday, January 30.

Notably, the north coast of Spain is under a Status Red alert, the highest level of warning, with predictions of massive sea swells reaching up to 10 meters and wind gusts of up to 88 kilometers per hour. Surrounding areas are also facing Orange alerts along the north, while Yellow warnings advise caution for eastern coastal regions, including popular Irish holiday destinations like Benidorm, Alicante, Almeria, and Murcia, primarily due to wind speeds reaching 80 kilometers per hour. The Balearic Islands, including Mallorca, Menorca, and Ibiza, are under Yellow advisories for strong winds and rough coastal conditions. Forecasts suggest a gradual easing of the storm by Wednesday, with red alerts downgraded to orange and most yellow alerts expected to lift by Thursday. An AEMET spokesperson outlined the expected weather pattern, stating: 'The deep storm Herminia, centered around the British Isles, continues to generate a strong storm that today is extending to most of the Peninsula and, to a lesser extent, to the Balearic Islands. Wind and waves are the most relevant phenomena, but also widespread rainfall is expected, more abundant in the northwest, which will be in the form of snow in mountain areas.' The spokesperson continued, 'Storm Herminia will move on by Wednesday, but a new and deep Atlantic storm will arrive that will move through the extreme north of the peninsula.' For Wednesday's conditions, they elaborated: 'It is expected to worsen again the wind from the west, with very strong gusts in Galicia and the rest of the facade Cantabrian, as well as in the Iberian system, in the Northern plateau and in points of the eastern third of the peninsula. It is not ruled out that there may be hurricanes locally in high mountain areas of the mountain range.' Looking towards the end of the week, they added: 'On Thursday it is likely that the wind will turn north and a mass of air will break into the Peninsula very cold of polar origin. If this scenario comes true, snowfall would become the most significant.' Looking even further ahead, they concluded: 'Starting on Friday, the most likely scenario points to a progressive decrease in rainfall over the Peninsula and, therefore, in snowfall, although during this day it could increase instability in the Mediterranean area, with showers that could be significant in the environment from the Balearic Island.' Irish holidaymakers are strongly advised to monitor local weather forecasts carefully and take all necessary precautions to ensure their safety during this severe weather event
