Over 100 people have died or been seriously ill in Turkey after consuming illegally produced local spirits. The UK Foreign Office has issued a warning to its citizens, urging them to buy alcohol only from licensed vendors and avoid homemade drinks.

An urgent warning has been issued for holidaymakers planning to travel to Turkey over the potential dangers of consuming local alcohol. More than 100 people have died or become seriously ill after drinking illegally produced local spirits. In Istanbul alone, 70 people have died from the poisoning since January 14, according to NTV, while more than 100 in the city also died from counterfeit alcohol last year.

In the capital Ankara, 33 have died since the start of the year, NTV added, citing Ankara governor Vasip Sahin. The UK Foreign Office, responsible for keeping Brits updated regarding travel to over 226 countries, has warned its citizens: 'In Turkey, including Ankara and Istanbul, people have died or suffered serious illness after drinking illegally produced local spirits and counterfeit bottles of branded alcohol. 'They added: 'Buy alcoholic beverages only from licensed liquor stores, buy drinks only at licensed bars and hotels, avoid home-made alcoholic drinks, check bottle seals are intact, check labels for poor print quality or incorrect spelling.' The UK Foreign Office says if you or anyone you know falls ill after drinking alcohol, seek urgent medical attention. While the Department of Foreign Affairs does not specifically mention illegally produced alcohol, they have issued other safety advice for Irish tourists. The DFA said: 'Our general advice to Irish citizens in Türkiye or those who intend to travel to Türkiye is to exercise a high degree of caution at all times. Avoid all protests and demonstrations and minimise time spent in crowded areas, particularly those frequented by foreigners, follow local security advice, and monitor local media. You should also devise and/or review a personal security plan. 'Please also be aware that the police in Türkiye can take measures such as the use of tear gas to control protesters. Ensure you have a charged mobile phone at all times. Please carry ID / passport at all times, presenting to security officers if requested (and keep a copy to hand also).'
