The meeting took place in von der Leyen's Brussels office in early October after a chance encounter in Maastricht earlier in the year. Rieu, who was born in Maastricht, met von der Leyen during a campaign debate for the Europe an elections.
He later requested a meeting with the commission president, who was seeking re-election. During their brief encounter, Rieu proposed that the EU provide significant funding for a world tour. Rieu followed up with von der Leyen on May 1st, outlining his idea for a tour that would feature his usual orchestra of 120 musicians alongside a 100-person male choir composed of singers from across Europe
