Bookies had been offering short odds on the prospect of snowfall on Christmas Day but the latest weather models appear to have ended hopes of festive snow
It looks like Ireland will have to continue dreaming of a white Christmas , with the country now expected to be warmer than some parts of Spain on December 25 – putting an end to hopes of snow on the big day.
However, Met Éireann is no longer mentioning the possibility of wintry showers on its extended range forecast, and the latest weather charts suggest that most of Ireland will be the same temperature as the Costa del Sol on Christmas Day. Similar conditions are anticipated in the south of Spain next week, with the mercury dipping below 10 degrees in some central parts of the country.
The rain will become patchy overnight, clearing eastwards with scattered showers following. Lowest temperatures of 9 to 13 degrees with fresh to strong southwesterly winds veering westerly. It'll start out fairly dry on Wednesday morning with just showers around before a spell of rain will spread across the southern half of the country in the afternoon. Most of Connacht and Ulster will avoid the rain altogether with just showers feeding in at times.
