Nearly €20,000 was deducted from the salaries of outgoing TDs following the dissolution of the Dáil last November to cover unpaid bar and restaurant bills. A total of 47 TDs had outstanding balances, with one owing nearly €2,000. A new system introduced in 2014 allows for outstanding bills to be deducted from salaries if unpaid after two months, and can also apply after the dissolution of the Dáil. Records show six TDs had tabs exceeding €1,000, while the Oireachtas Service did not comment on the figures.
Almost €20,000 was deducted from the salaries of outgoing TDs following the dissolution of the Dáil last November in respect of unpaid bar and restaurant tabs in Leinster House.
A new system was subsequently introduced to avoid such eventualities, allowing outstanding bills to be deducted from members’ salaries if they remain unpaid after two months. Leinster House has two bars – the Visitors’ Bar, which is open to guests, and the Members’ Bar, which can only be accessed by TDs and senators. It also has a members’ restaurant, a self-service restaurant, and a coffee dock.
Senators did not have their tabs closed in November because the Seanad was not dissolved, and they could therefore continue to carry over debts accrued in restaurants and bars.
