Taoiseach Micheál Martin insists the Irish government will 'protect renters' despite drawing criticism for suggesting potential changes to Rent Pressure Zones (RPZs). He argues that attracting more private investment, particularly in the rental sector, is crucial to addressing Ireland's housing crisis. Martin maintains that any changes to RPZs, which cap rent increases, will be based on an evidence-based approach.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin has insisted the Government will “protect renters” as he downplayed his comments on the potential changes to Rent Pressure Zones .

Asked if RPZs might be ended, Mr Martin said addressing housing issues will “entail politically very difficult decisions” and that the lack of “security of environment for investors” had to “stop and change”. Speaking in Brussels on Monday, Mr Martin said he was “surprised by the headlines” on his comments on the rental market but doubled down on his investment comments.

“But we do need to bring more private sector investment into house building. We will protect renters. We brought in the rent credit specifically to do that, and the Rent Pressure Zones have been effective in quite a number of areas. He said: “Rent regulation is not the reason for sluggish new housing supply. This is down to the failures of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael’s housing plan. Renters should not have to foot the bill for Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael's Failures in housing. Indeed, renters need greater protection from rent hikes, including a three-year ban on rent increases and a full month's rent back into every private renters' pocket.
