A 20-year-old man has been charged in connection with the murder of Quaham Babatunde, a 34-year-old asylum seeker from Nigeria, in Dublin. Another suspect remains in custody.

A man in his 20s has been charged in connection with the fatal stabbing of an asylum seeker in Dublin. Gardaí confirmed that the man will appear before Dublin District Court, Criminal Courts of Justice on Wednesday morning following the fatal stabbing of Quaham Babatunde, 34, who is originally from Nigeria, on Dublin’s South Anne Street at around 3am last Saturday morning. The other individual arrested as part of the investigation remains in PSNI custody at this time.

On Tuesday, PSNI detectives were granted an extra 36 hours to question the 23-year-old man, who was arrested in Belfast on Sunday as he was about to board a ferry to Liverpool. Also on Tuesday, Jeffrey Bangu, 21, of Cardy Rock Crescent in Balbriggan, Co Dublin appeared before Dublin District Court charged with Section 3 assault causing harm to Mr Babatunde at Duke Lane, Dublin 2 on February 15. He is further accused of section 3 assault causing harm on another man at South Anne Street in Dublin on the same date. He is also accused of violent disorder in that in the course of a fight he allegedly produced a knife. He is further charged with violent disorder on South Anne Street against persons unknown - in that he’s accused of threatening to use unlawful violence. Giving evidence of arrest, charge and caution, Garda David Dolan of Pearse Street said the accused made no reply to all charges after caution. He told the court that Gardaí would make “strenuous” objections to bail.
