A Dublin couple's contemporary Victorian home, described as an 'art gallery', has reached the final of RTÉ's Home of the Year competition. Mary Phelan and Aiden Fitzpatrick's period home, renovated extensively by the couple over four years, impressed judges with its dramatic colour palette and artistic flair.

A contemporary Victorian home in Dublin , described as an ' art gallery ', has reached the final of Home of the Year. Mary Phelan and Aiden Fitzpatrick from Dublin purchased their period home in 2005 and embarked on extensive renovations, which they largely completed themselves over four years. Mary shared that she provides the creative concepts, which Aiden skillfully brings to life. The couple had always dreamt of owning and renovating an old house.

After 20 years, they still deeply cherish their home and their accomplishments. Scoring 27 points, architect Hugh Wallace remarked, 'This is like stepping into an art gallery. The homeowner is using this dramatic color palette to enhance their artwork.' Designer Amanda Bone added, 'It's not what I expected.' \ Speaking about their home, Mary stated, 'We adore our home, and I believe when you undertake a large renovation, it holds even greater significance. It truly means the world to us.' \The show also featured Jason Cooke and Katrina Farrelly Cooke from Wicklow. Jason and Katrina moved into their home in 2004. It had served as a guest house in the 1920s and 1930s, possessing charm and grandeur but lacking modern living space. In 2021, they finally received planning permission to execute a once-in-a-lifetime renovation and retrofit, while also doubling the house's footprint with an extension. Their design goal was to seamlessly expand their home, allowing the late Edwardian, early Art Deco style to radiate throughout. They aimed to incorporate contemporary living spaces and family needs. They described their home as an homage to late Edwardian and early Art Deco styling, using bold colors, carefully curated furnishings, and original artworks to create their theme. They take pride in having completed a sensitive restoration of an Edwardian period home. \The programme also showcased architect Michael McKeown's contemporary new home in Derry. In 2020, he began the four-year construction process on family land, designing and managing the build himself. Completing it last year, he opted for a contemporary design with eclectic influences drawn from mid-century modern, Scandinavian, and bohemian styles. He furnished his home with warm and cozy materials, dark colors, and soft furnishings, accented with pops of color and contemporary elements
