Cooney died after suffering an intercranial haemorrhage following his bout against against Welsh fighter Nathan Howells in Belfast just over a week ago.
The bout took place on a Thursday night, January 19th, and O’Brien, a member of my father’s club, St Saviour’s, died on the Saturday morning. His body was removed to St. Canice’s Church in Finglas on the Monday evening and he was buried the following morning in Glasnevin. She competed in eight successive International Cross-Country Championships from 1967, won silver in the team event in that first year and bronze three years later, and won a remarkable 19 national championships.
On the morning her brother died, she was due to fly to London to compete in the British Cross-Country Championships and brother Noel was due in Belfast for a race.
