Ireland is preparing for its first storm of 2025, Storm Eowyn, which is expected to bring strong winds and heavy rain to the country. The storm follows on the heels of Storm Darragh last month, and the southern regions are expected to be the worst hit.
The first storm of 2025 has officially been named by the Met Office . Ireland and the UK are set to be battered by strong winds and heavy rain in the coming days. Following Storm Darragh, which caused significant disruptions across the country a month ago, Storm Eowyn is anticipated to trigger multiple weather warnings in Ireland as a deepening low-pressure system moves closely towards the country.
The southern regions of the island are projected to be the most severely impacted, with current meteorological models indicating that the storm's center will bring intense gusts to that area. Although Met Éireann, Ireland's national meteorological service, has not yet issued any weather warnings, it has acknowledged the naming of Storm Eowyn and advises the public to stay informed about weather updates as conditions are predicted to become unstable later this week. A weather advisory has been implemented by Met Éireann, valid up to midnight on Saturday night, due to the potential for damaging weather conditions. A spokesperson for Met Éireann stated: 'On Thursday night and throughout Friday, a deepening Low-Pressure system is anticipated to track close to Ireland. Very strong winds are likely across the country, with the potential for destructive wind gusts and disruption in certain areas. High seas and periods of heavy rain are also expected. 'Met Éireann is continuously monitoring the evolving situation, and weather warnings will be issued as confidence in the forecast track and intensity of the Low-Pressure system improves. 'Please consult the met.ie website and app for updates on forecasts and warnings in the coming days.
