Ireland braces for the impact of Storm Éowyn, with a Status Red weather warning issued for widespread damage and dangerous conditions. Schools, transportation, and public services will be significantly affected.
Schools, creches, and colleges will be closed on Friday in the counties impacted by a Status Red weather warning issued due to Storm Éowyn . The storm is expected to hit Ireland in the early hours of Friday morning, with various red weather warnings remaining in effect across the country until Saturday afternoon. In preparation for the storm's arrival, The National Emergency Co-ordination Group met today to evaluate the situation and released an update regarding school closures.
It confirmed that all schools, early learning centers, childcare facilities, and higher education institutions within areas under the Status Red warning will be closed for the duration of the warning. The NECG has also advised individuals in areas affected by the red warning to 'stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and take action to protect themselves and their properties.' Employers are encouraged to facilitate remote working arrangements, and only emergency personnel should travel for work purposes. Public transportation services will cease operation in areas under the red warning until conditions improve. The warnings are being issued frequently, so it is crucial to stay updated on Met Eireann's website as the storm approaches. They have issued a warning stating: 'Gale to storm force southwest to west winds will bring severe, damaging and extremely destructive gusts in excess of 130km/h.'Impacts: • Danger to life • Extremely dangerous traveling conditions • Unsafe working conditions • Disruption and cancellations to transport • Many fallen trees • Significant and widespread power outages • Impacts to communications networks • Cancellation of events • Structural damage • Wave overtopping • Coastal flooding in low-lying and exposed areas.' According to the national forecaster, Éowyn is predicted to be a deep low-pressure system, currently projected to track northwest of Ireland. This will introduce strong southeasterly winds, which will shift to west to south-westerly and intensify throughout Friday morning. The system will also bring periods of heavy rain across various parts of the country and sleet and snow, particularly to western and northern regions
