Ireland prepares for the onslaught of Storm Éowyn, named by the UK Met Office, which is set to bring a barrage of heavy rain, strong winds, and the potential for sleet and snow to the island nation. The storm is expected to make landfall on Thursday night and continue to affect Ireland throughout Friday.

Met Eireann has issued an update on this week's weather forecast as Storm Éowyn has been named by the UK Met Office. Ireland is bracing for wet and very windy weather later this week, with the potential for sleet and snow in some areas. Storm Éowyn is expected to make landfall on Thursday night (January 23rd) and persist throughout Friday (January 24th).

A Met Eireann spokesperson stated, 'Éowyn is forecast to be a deep low-pressure system, tracking to the northwest of Ireland, introducing strong southeasterly winds that will shift to west to south-westerly and intensify through Friday morning. The system will also bring heavy rain across different parts of the country, with sleet and snow particularly in the west and north.' The spokesperson further emphasized, 'High-impact weather is anticipated for Ireland on Thursday night and Friday as a deepening low-pressure system, Storm Éowyn, tracks close to the northwest of Ireland. Very strong winds and spells of heavy rain are forecast. Initially, the rain will transition to sleet or snow in some parts of the northwest and north of the country, but it will quickly revert back to rain as the system moves through.' A nationwide weather advisory is currently in effect until midnight on Saturday (January 25th), but Met Eireann will issue more specific weather warnings closer to the storm's arrival. Liz Coleman, Deputy Head of Forecasting, commented, 'Western and northwestern counties are likely to see status orange wind warnings as a minimum, but we are closely monitoring the situation and will issue warnings as Met Eireann's high-resolution model, which provides information two days ahead, comes into play. We are in close contact with the NDFEM and emergency management stakeholders and will provide timely updates as the situation progresses.' The impact of Storm Éowyn is projected to be felt overnight on Thursday and throughout Friday, with some effects potentially lasting longer. The storm is expected to bring dangerous travelling conditions, displaced objects, fallen trees, and power outages. Poor visibility due to sleet or snow, surface water flooding, and localized river flooding are also anticipated as the ground is saturated nationwide. Wave overtopping at high tide is another risk. In a statement on Met.ie, the organization assured, 'We are closely monitoring the situation and will provide updated information as required.
