Weather expert warns of potential power outages and damaging gusts as Storm Éowyn brings heavy snow and powerful winds to Ireland.
A weather expert has issued a stark warning about Storm Éowyn , predicting it could be the worst storm Ireland has seen in years. The storm is poised to make landfall on Thursday night and Friday, bringing with it a combination of heavy snow, wintry showers, and powerful, disruptive winds. Cathal Nolan of Carlow Weather has been providing regular updates online, outlining the potential impact of the storm in the coming days.
He expressed concern about the overnight charts, stating that high-resolution models show damaging gusts across the entire country, making this storm a serious threat. Nolan also warned of potential power outages and snow in parts of the northwest. He shared a forecast showing possible wave heights of 13.7 meters off the southwest coast early Friday morning, highlighting the storm's intensity. Met Eireann, Ireland's national meteorological service, has similarly confirmed that Storm Éowyn will bring strong and disruptive winds to Ireland on Thursday night and Friday, accompanied by some localized snowfall in the northwest. Today will begin with some fog, but temperatures are expected to drop throughout the night. The forecast predicts that mist and fog will lift from most areas, while some persistent fog might linger in the north and northeast. While most of the country will enjoy a dry day with sunny spells, scattered showers are possible. Temperatures will range from 4 to 9 degrees Celsius, with colder readings where fog persists. Overnight temperatures will dip to 1 to 4 degrees Celsius, with areas of fog and a chance of frost. However, by late Thursday night, southerly winds will strengthen, clearing any fog and frost as rain spreads along the western coast. Thursday will see a dramatic shift in weather conditions as Storm Éowyn arrives. Met.ie predicts a blustery day with a band of squally and possibly thundery rain moving eastward across the country in the morning. Sunny spells and showers, some heavy and potentially containing hail, will follow from the west through the afternoon. Temperatures on Thursday will range from 4 to 8 degrees Celsius, with fresh and gusty southerly winds, shifting westerly later in the day
