Mirror Sport columnist and League of Ireland legend Stuart Byrne has the final word every Friday

There's an obvious starting point for Stephen Bradley ’s gripe with the FAI and it’s called 40 years of frustration. If you don’t share his anger or don’t understand where he’s coming from, then you need to educate yourself - sharpish.

Shels played Barcelona in the 1960s and I bet everyone at the game knew all about the Shels players and nothing about the visitors. If that game was played now, nobody would give a s*** about the Shels lads. This isn’t the teenage Bradley who went to Arsenal, and it’s not the Bradley I roomed with at Drogheda United. Nor is it the quiet, fresh-faced Bradley who first took charge of Rovers in 2016. Rather, Bradley is speaking from a position of power and respect, having guided his team to the cusp of the Last 16 of a major European competition.

The people running the FAI today love their powerpoints, as Bradley pointed out. They like a good report into this and that, they love hitting KPIs and tying themselves up in knots with their corporate speak. Blah, blah, blah. It doesn’t work in this league. Heimir Hallgrimsson is suggesting that Rovers players - who are deep in a European competition - need to move away to get call-ups. It’s so bloody depressing.

I remember conversations with people in the game over the last five or six years, where they bemoaned the lack of strikers. But we live in a fanatical world where people are sheep. If you perceive something to be great and the right thing to do, hundreds of thousands of people will do it - just because.
