Donal O'Donovan, 66, from Shinagh, Dunmanway, Cork, lost his life in a single-car accident on Saturday evening. Authorities believe a medical emergency may have been a factor in the crash. Locals described Mr. O'Donovan as a kind and gentle man. His death comes as Ireland grapples with an average of one road fatality every two days in 2025.

Local tributes are pouring in for Donal O'Donovan, a 66-year-old man from Shinagh, Dunmanway, Cork, who tragically lost his life in a single-car accident on Saturday evening, February 1st, at approximately 6:35 pm in Gortnamuckla. While the exact cause of the accident is under investigation, authorities believe Mr. O'Donovan may have experienced a medical emergency. Gardaí (Irish police) responded to the scene and confirmed the man's death at the location.

His body was then transported to Cork University Hospital for further examination.Mr. O'Donovan was remembered by locals as a kind and gentle soul. He was described as 'a lovely man and an absolute gentleman'. He is predeceased by his wife Kate and leaves behind his sisters, Mary and Bunty, and his brother, Con. His funeral arrangements will see him repose at O'Neill's Funeral Home in Dunmanway on Tuesday evening, February 4th, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, with prayers at 8:00 pm. A funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday at 12:00 noon in St. Patrick's Church, Dunmanway, followed by burial at St. Joseph's Cemetery. This tragic incident comes amid growing concern over road safety in Ireland. Statistics reveal that the country has experienced an average of one road fatality every two days in 2025. As of February 4th, a total of 15 people have lost their lives on Irish roads in the first 33 days of the year. While this rate is slightly lower than the alarming spike seen in the first half of 2024, authorities remain vigilant. An Garda Síochána's Bank Holiday Roads Policing Operation, which ran from Thursday, January 31st, to Tuesday, February 4th, resulted in the detection of over 1,000 speeding drivers and the arrest of 163 motorists for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. These figures underscore the ongoing challenge of reducing road deaths and improving safety on Irish roads
