Camellias are popular container plants, known for their glossy evergreen foliage and beautiful, often fragrant flowers. However, they require specific care to thrive. As a native of Southeast Asia, camellias prefer a sheltered, mild garden with humus-rich, moist, but free-draining acidic soil or ericaceous compost. They thrive in light shade, protected from frost and wind.
Camellias are particularly sensitive to harsh winter conditions, especially exposure to east-facing locations prone to frost and icy winds. This stress can lead to leaf and bud drop. Moving your camellia to a sheltered spot with dappled shade can help it recover. Even in milder climates, pot-grown camellias are vulnerable to root damage during cold winters. Wrapping the container and plant base in horticultural fleece during forecasted cold snaps is recommended. In extreme cases, temporary shelter under a glasshouse, polytunnel, porch, conservatory, or even a shed is advisable.Inconsistent or insufficient watering, especially during the summer when flower buds form, can also contribute to leaf and bud drop. Examples include Camellia x williamsii “Debbie” (double, rose-pink flowers in late spring), Camellia x williamsii “Anticipation” (hot-pink double flowers from late winter/early spring), and Camellia reticulata “Black Lace” (dark-red double flowers, mid-spring).
