Ireland is set to face storm chaos in the coming weeks, with heavy rain, strong winds and the risk of flooding, but Met Eireann has forecast an unexpected twist as temperatures are forecast to soar well above average.
As we near the middle of February, Ireland finds itself in the midst of typical winter weather - grey skies, cold temperatures and seemingly ever-present rain. It's that time of year when many people across the country long for the first signs of spring. However, despite the usual seasonal doom and gloom, there's an unexpected twist in the forecast.
The meteorological agency said: "The upcoming week will be unsettled and dull with spells of rain, turning milder from Tuesday onwards." "Becoming wet on Monday as rain in the west and southwest spreads across the country, turning heavy in places with the potential for spot flooding. Highest temperatures for most of 8C to 12C but it will be cooler in Ulster with highs of 5C to 8C in moderate, occasionally fresh, southeasterly winds.
Met Eireann's longer-term outlook indicates that these warmer-than-usual conditions are likely to persist, with a strong southerly airflow dominating Ireland's weather patterns. This will keep temperatures elevated - but also brings windy conditions and more rain than usual - and it's a trend that's expected to continue throughout February and into March.
