In a statement, a Garda spokesperson said: 'Gardaí attended following the discovery of the body of a male (aged in his 80s) at a residential location in Spiddal, Co. Galway, on Monday 27th January 2025. 'The body of the man was removed to University Hospital Galway for post-mortem examination. A file will now be prepared for the Coroner.' The man's body was discovered just days after Storm Eowyn wreaked havoc along the west coast of Ireland. Connemara was particularly badly hit by the storm, with gusts of over 180km/h recorded at Mace Head in Carna, making the storm one of the most powerful to hit Ireland since the so-called 'night of the big wind' in 1839. Trees, powerlines, collapsed walls and flooded roads have all been reported in parts of Galway as the county faced the brunt of hurricane-force winds. Residents in Spiddal were left without power for up to four days in the wake of Storm Eowyn, with some premises not expected to get electricity back until next week
