Over 60,000 customers may not have their power restored until the first week of February following Storm Eowyn, which caused widespread damage to Ireland's electricity infrastructure. The ESB has restored power to 366,000 customers since Friday, but 402,000 remain without supply. The storm has been described as the worst ever experienced by ESB Networks, with one fatality reported.
The ESB has said that over 60,000 customers may not have their power restored until the first week of February as work continues to reconnect hundreds of thousands of homes in the aftermath of Storm Eowyn .
A further 66,000 customers in the worst-affected areas, however, “will progressively have power restored over the course of the following week,” the ESB said in a statement in which Eowyn was described as “by far the worst storm experienced by ESB Networks, both in terms of customers losing supply and the scale of damage across the network”.
Minister for Housing James Browne has said that financial support will be made available to families and businesses. He told RTÉ that government ministers will work together to see what supports are needed for those affected. Meanwhile, the Taoiseach thanked emergency crews and responders working to restore power and clear roads and said a huge amount of work is needed in the days ahead to restore electricity, water and communications to hundreds of thousands of people.
