Storm Éowyn has claimed an iconic victim in Cork, the second famous tree to be knocked by storms in the Rebel County in the last five years
From open fields to the emergence of Cork city's first shopping centre, this storied copper beech tree stood proudly at the entrance to Wilton Shopping Centre.
Wilton Shopping Centre took to Facebook to break the news to the community, describing the beech as 'wonderful' and expressing sadness over its fall: "Our wonderful Beech tree unfortunately fell last night during the storm. We hope everyone has stayed safe during Storm Éowyn." A regular visitor echoed these sentiments, saying: "Oh that is such a shame. It has always been there as long as I can remember and I'm 53. I remember the Shopping Centre opening and the excitement of it all. A piece of the fabric of Cork. I hope it is put to good use."
