Former Cork City Lord Mayor and Minister of State, Danny Wallace, has passed away at the age of 82. Tributes are pouring in from politicians and friends who remember him as a dedicated public servant and a 'man of the people'.
Tributes are pouring in from politicians following the passing of former Cork City Lord Mayor and Minister of State, Danny Wallace . The 82-year-old will be deeply missed by his loving family and friends, including his devoted wife Ethel and their five children, Damien, Fiona, Kieran, Nicola and Andrea. Danny, known for being 'available night and day' for those in his constituency, served as a City Councillor for Cork North Central from 1979-1992 and was Cork City Lord Mayor from 1985-1986.
Born in 1942, Danny was a pupil of North Monastery Co-educational Secondary School. He was first elected to the 24th Dáil in 1982, holding his seat until his retirement in 2007. Current Lord Mayor, Cllr. Dan Boyle, expressed his condolences to the former mayor while praising his achievements during his time in office. Boyle stated: 'It is with great sadness that I have learned of the passing of former Lord Mayor, Danny Wallace. Danny served as a Councillor on the then Cork Corporation from 1979-1992 and was elected Lord Mayor in 1985. “Danny was instrumental in the development of our sister city relationship with San Francisco; a relationship that has flourished for over 40 years. My condolences to Danny’s wife Ethel, his children Damien, Fiona, Kieran, Nicola and Andrea.' Fianna Fáil Cllr. Tony Fitzgerald described Danny's death as a 'great loss' as he paid tribute to his friend. 'Very sad news today of the passing of Former Lord Mayor & Minister of State Dan Wallace. My deepest sympathies to Ethel and his children and extended family,' Fitzgerald shared. He continued: 'Danny was very much admired and respected as a person and as a public representative. He was indeed a man of the people and was available night and day to his constituents. He is a great loss to his family and the Fianna Fáil party. God rest his soul.' Chief Executive of Cork City Council, Valerie O’Sullivan, added: “A proud son of the North Mon and Cork City, Danny was a positive advocate for the City, both in his time as a city councillor, as a Cork North Central TD and Minister of State. My personal condolences to Danny’s family.' The Lord Mayor will open a book of condolences in City Hall tomorrow
